The Ucchista Ganapati Ashtottara Shatanamavali, commonly known as the Ucchista Ganapati Ashtottaram, is a devotional hymn comprising 108 names that extol the various attributes and virtues of Ucchista Ganapati.

oṃ dvātriṃśadbhairavavyūhanāyakāya namo namaḥ oṃ

ॐ द्वात्रिंशद्भैरवव्यूहनायकाय नमो नमः ॐ

Salutations to the One who leads the thirty two bhairavas and their armies.

Here is a word-by-word translation and commentary on Name 58 of the Ucchiṣṭa Gaṇapati Aṣṭottaraśatanāma Stotram:

Verse 58:

oṃ dvātriṃśadbhairavavyūhanāyakāya namo namaḥ oṃ
ॐ द्वात्रिंशद्भैरवव्यूहनायकाय नमो नमः ॐ

Word-by-Word Translation:

  • oṃ – The primordial sacred syllable invoking the divine.
  • dvātriṃśat (द्वात्रिंशत्) – Thirty-two (32).
  • bhairava (भैरव) – The fierce form of Śiva; also a class of guardian deities in Tantra.
  • vyūha (व्यूह) – Formation, array, or divine emanation/manifestation.
  • nāyakāya (नायकाय) – To the leader, commander, or chief.
  • namo namaḥ – Salutations again and again.

Full Translation:

“Salutations again and again to the One who is the leader of the thirty-two-fold formation of Bhairavas.”

Commentary:

This powerful name links Ucchiṣṭa Gaṇapati to the fierce and protective energies of Bhairava, an aspect of Śiva known for annihilating ignorance, ego, and obstacles on the spiritual path.

🔱 Dvātriṃśat Bhairavas – The 32 Bhairavas:

  • In certain Tantric traditions, especially those aligned with Śākta and Kaula schools, Bhairava is not a singular figure but manifests in multiple forms or emanations.
  • These 32 Bhairavas are fierce guardians of directions, sacred sites (śakti pīṭhas), and stages of yogic evolution.
  • Each Bhairava governs a specific tattva (principle) and acts as a cosmic protector and transformer.

🕉️ Vyūha – Divine Formation or Emanation:

  • Vyūha is a deeply esoteric term used in Tantra and Bhakti metaphysics. It signifies an intentional array or expansion of divine energies.
  • Here, the 32 Bhairavas are viewed as an organized, purposeful configuration—a divine army or spiritual map—through which cosmic functions are carried out.

👑 Nāyaka – The Leader:

  • Ucchiṣṭa Gaṇapati is declared the Nāyaka (chief, leader, commander) of this entire formation.
  • He is the one who leads, directs, and presides over these Bhairava energies—establishing Him not only as a remover of obstacles but also as a master of fierce transformative forces.

Tantric Insight:

This nāma affirms Ucchiṣṭa Gaṇapati’s role as the central intelligence behind fierce transformative energies. He is not separate from Bhairava but is the one who orchestrates the fierce protectors and channels their energy for the sādhaka’s liberation.

This makes Him especially revered in Tantric rituals involving Bhairavas, Yoginīs, and Śakti pīṭhas, where the practitioner seeks not just blessings, but initiation through intensity.
