The path of bhakti, or devotion, is a journey of the heart, a blossoming of love for the Divine. For the sadhaka, the spiritual aspirant, this journey unfolds in stages, each marked by a deepening understanding and a more refined expression of this sacred emotion. The scriptures and the wisdom of the ages speak of various levels of bhakti, and understanding these can illuminate our own steps on this transformative path.
Let’s explore three significant stages in this beautiful ascent.
1. The Budding Seed: Bhakti Driven by Fear and Desire
At the initial stages of spiritual seeking, our motivations are often intertwined with the concerns of our worldly existence. This first level of bhakti is characterized by devotion that arises primarily from fear or lust.
Imagine the individual who turns to the Divine in times of crisis – fearing illness, loss, or misfortune, they seek solace and intervention. Their prayers might be driven by a desire to avert negative consequences, a plea for protection from perceived threats. This is bhakti born out of fear.
Similarly, many are drawn to the Divine with the hope of fulfilling their worldly desires – the lust for wealth, power, fame, or material possessions. Their devotion might manifest as offerings and prayers aimed at securing these coveted outcomes. While seemingly transactional, this initial engagement with the Divine is not without its value. It is often the first stirring of awareness beyond the purely materialistic realm. Like a seed planted in the earth, even if the initial soil is mixed, the potential for growth remains.
It’s important to recognize this stage without judgment. It is a natural human tendency to seek help and fulfillment. However, the limitations of this level of bhakti lie in its self-centered nature. The focus remains on personal gain or the avoidance of suffering, rather than on the inherent beauty and love of the Divine.
2. The Blossoming Flower: Teevra Bhakti – Unconditional and Intense Love
As the sadhaka progresses, a profound shift begins to occur. Through sincere practice, contemplation, and the grace of the Divine, the motivations evolve. The anxieties of fear and the cravings of lust gradually give way to a pure, unwavering love for the deity. This is Teevra Bhakti – intense devotion born out of an overflowing heart, devoid of any expectation of return.
In this stage, the devotee’s love is helpless in the most beautiful sense. It is a spontaneous outpouring, a deep yearning for the Divine that asks for nothing in exchange. The joy of simply being in communion with the beloved deity becomes the ultimate reward. The sadhaka finds profound bliss in chanting the divine name, meditating on the divine form, and serving the divine will, not for personal gain, but out of the sheer ecstasy of love.
This is the bhakti of the great saints and mystics, whose hearts are completely consumed by their beloved. Their devotion is a radiant fire that burns away all ego and self-interest, leaving only pure, unconditional love. This level of bhakti is transformative, purifying the heart and opening the doors to deeper spiritual realization.
3. The Fruit of Oneness: Advaitha Bhakti – Embodiment of the Divine
The culmination of intense spiritual practice (tapas) and the grace (anugraham) of the Divine leads to the highest level of devotion: Advaitha Bhakti. In this profound state, the distinction between the devotee and the deity begins to dissolve. Through unwavering dedication and divine favor, the bhakta comes to embody the very qualities and essence of the beloved.
This is not merely intellectual understanding of oneness, but a lived experience of unity. The sadhaka, through intense devotion and purification, becomes a living manifestation of the Divine. Their thoughts, words, and actions become aligned with the divine will. They radiate the same love, compassion, and wisdom that they have so intensely worshipped.
Imagine a drop of water merging with the ocean – it doesn’t just become like the ocean; it becomes the ocean. Similarly, in Advaitha Bhakti, the individual consciousness expands and merges with the universal consciousness of the Divine. This is a state of profound liberation and ultimate realization.
The Journey Continues..
The three levels of bhakti are not rigid categories but rather milestones on a continuous journey. Many sadhakas may experience a blend of these motivations at different times. The key is to be aware of our current state and to sincerely strive for the higher levels of devotion, allowing the transformative power of love to guide us towards the ultimate union with the Divine. The ascent of the heart is a beautiful and rewarding path, and every step taken with sincerity brings us closer to the radiant truth.
