The Ucchista Ganapati Ashtottara Shatanamavali, commonly known as the Ucchista Ganapati Ashtottaram, is a devotional hymn comprising 108 names that extol the various attributes and virtues of Ucchista Ganapati.

oṃ karpūravīṭikāsāraraktoṣṭhāya namo namaḥ oṃ

ॐ कर्पूरवीटिकासाररक्तोष्ठाय नमो नमः ॐ

Salutations to the One whose lips are reddened by the camphored betel offered to HIM in prayers.

Word-by-Word Translation

  • karpūra — camphor

  • vīṭikā — betel leaf/quids used in ritual offering

  • sāra — essence, mixture, or paste

  • rakta — red, reddened

  • oṣṭha — lips

  • āya — to the One who possesses
    namo namaḥ — repeated salutations

Literal meaning:
To the One whose lips are reddened by the essence of camphor-infused betel.


Commentary

This name points straight into the intimate and deeply personal dimension of Ucchista Ganapati worship. Unlike the sanitized, sanitised image of Ganesha found in mainstream traditions, here the deity accepts offerings that are sensual, aromatic, and earthy—camphored betel being a classical upacāra offered in tantric rites.

1. The reddened lips
Red lips symbolize aliveness, heat, and inner ignition. The tantric path is not about sterile devotion; it is about life-force in its full potency. The reddened lips of Ganapati reveal Him as the One who tastes the offerings of the devotee—not metaphorically, but as a living deity who shares rasa (essence) with the sādhaka.

2. Camphor (karpūra)
Camphor purifies, burns clean, and evaporates without residue. It represents:

  • ego burnt away

  • impurities dissolved

  • clarity flashing forth instantly

When camphor is mixed into the betel quid, it becomes a symbol of surrender steeped in purity.

3. Betel (vīṭikā)
Betel is associated with sensuality, hospitality, and intimate offering. In Vamachara, it signifies:

  • rasa (essence)

  • bhoga (experience)

  • a bridge between sensory offering and divine acceptance

Ganapati taking this offering signifies His acceptance of both the refined and the raw aspects of life.

4. The union of heat (rakta) and cool purity (karpūra)
This name subtly encodes a tantric paradox:

  • camphor = cooling purity

  • red lips = warming vitality

Together, they mirror the union of Śiva (cool) and Śakti (hot) within the Ucchista form of Ganapati.

5. The deeper import
This nāma tells the sādhaka that:

  • the Divine does not demand denial of the senses

  • sacredness can flow through taste, fragrance, and touch

  • offerings are not symbolic—they are participated in by the deity

  • devotion becomes rasa-samvāda—a communion of essences

Ucchista Ganapati is the Lord who receives offerings in real intimacy, dissolving the boundaries between the worshipper and the worshipped.
