ॐ सोमसूर्यबृहद्भानुलोचनाय नमो नमः ॐ

Salutations to the One whose eyes represent the sun, moon and fire

Word-by-Word Translation

  • oṃ — the primordial vibration, source of all perception

  • soma — the Moon; cooling, nourishing, reflective consciousness

  • sūrya — the Sun; illuminating, life-giving awareness

  • bṛhad — vast, great, expansive

  • bhānu — blazing light, fire, radiance

  • locanāya — to the One whose eyes

  • namo namaḥ — repeated salutations, surrender

  • oṃ — closure into unity

Literal meaning:
Salutations to the One whose eyes are the Moon, the Sun, and the vast blazing fire.

Commentary

This verse establishes Ucchiṣṭa Gaṇapati as the all-seeing cosmic consciousness, whose perception is not limited to human sight but operates across three fundamental planes of awareness.

1. The Moon Eye (Soma-locana)

The Moon represents:

  • mind (manas)

  • emotions

  • memory

  • reflective awareness

Gaṇapati’s moon-eye signifies his ability to see the inner world — the subconscious, emotional patterns, karmic impressions, and latent tendencies of the jīva.
Nothing hidden within the psyche escapes this gaze.

2. The Sun Eye (Sūrya-locana)

The Sun represents:

  • intellect (buddhi)

  • clarity

  • discernment

  • life force

Through the solar eye, Gaṇapati perceives action, intention, and direction.
This is the eye that dissolves confusion, burns ignorance, and reveals truth without distortion.

3. The Fire Eye (Bṛhad-Bhānu-locana)

The third eye is not merely luminous — it is vast fire, echoing Śiva’s eye of dissolution.
It represents:

  • transformative gnosis

  • destruction of karma

  • tantric awakening

  • direct insight (jñāna-dṛṣṭi)

This eye does not observe — it consumes and transforms.
When activated through grace or sādhana, it annihilates ignorance at the root.

Tantric and Yogic Significance

Together, these three eyes form a complete circuit of perception:

  • Moon — perceives the inner subtle realm

  • Sun — perceives the outer manifested realm

  • Fire — dissolves both into pure awareness

For the sādhaka, this verse teaches that Gaṇapati:

  • knows your thoughts (Moon)

  • knows your actions (Sun)

  • knows your destiny and karma (Fire)

No obstacle is accidental. No delay is unseen.
Every experience is under the governance of this tri-ocular wisdom.
