KAMAKHYA NAVRATRI DIARIES DAY 2: The path of The Kaula.
Who exactly is a Kaula? According to the Tantraloka…
“In this ritual, the wise individual ought to employ the very elements deemed forbidden in conventional scriptures. These are steeped in the essence of the left-hand path.
Once the distinction between purity and impurity is relinquished, one realizes the Divine transcends duality…”
A Kaula adheres to her Tradition. She follows her guru, embracing the left-handed path. Not because she is morally depraved or given to excess, but because she recognizes the necessity of purifying her innate urges. She offers them at the altar of the Devi, surrendering to the Yoni.
The Kaula questions herself: why should she deem it impure? Simply because a Brahmin Priest dictates it so? If she heeds his words, she’ll be barred from prayer and ostracized during menstruation.
Is copulation truly a mark of degeneracy? After all, wasn’t she herself conceived in such a manner? The Kaula embarks on introspection: Who am I?
The Devi responds with her bold laughter “Your perceptions are flawed. It’s your outlook, your comprehension, your grasp of the world that defines purity and impurity. If you acknowledge my presence in all things, then how can anything be impure?”
The Kaula recognizes her ignorance. She feels spiritually vacant, devoid of understanding. Who is she to judge purity and impurity? Deep down, she yearns for liberation. Freedom from societal norms, knowing she can rely only on herself. It’s all about Swatantrata, self-sufficiency.
Tantra teaches the art of balancing worldly pleasures and spirituality simultaneously. Only in these Tantric practices (Shakti Sadhanas) can one boldly proclaim “Bhogascha Mokshacha”—the ability to control both pleasure and liberation, a hallmark of the Original Kaula.
